Here comes the sun: The hottest trend for SS19

The long winter drags on with grey skies and rainy days, but already there’s a hint that spring is ready to burst through. The first sight of a yellow cluster of daffodils or crocuses lifts the spirits like nothing else, and it seems that the hottest designers have encapsulated this emotion in their SS19 catwalk trends.

Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and Caroline Herrera have all brought a flash of colour to their latest collections, from the deep Aspen gold to a bold, bright lemon verbena. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the mood brightening yellow theme has also been enthusiastically picked up by the high street, and will be gracing all of our wardrobes this summer.

“My winter colour has been mustard, and yellow seems the natural extension,” explains student Steph Adams. “I will be bringing a bit of summer sunshine into my wardrobe, brightening up the day regardless of what the weather is doing.” Steph cites Oscar de la Renta’s stunning lemon yellow dress at the S/S 2019 New York Fashion Week as her top lust-after item, but she’ll be shopping for statement items and accessories in similar hues from Zara and Brandy Melville.

For founder Tanya Patel, including a strong splash of yellow in the spring/summer collection for her brand Lily and Ribbon was also a no brainer. “When I did my research for the collection, I had a big board predicting trends. Everything indicated that yellow was the big season colour, and the top trend we could take to maternity and nursing fashion.”

You don’t have to be brave to wear yellow: you can incorporate the trend this season as overtly or subtly as you like. Here are four AGLAIA suggestions for wearing 2019’s hottest colour.

Accessorise

If you want to dip your toe into the trend to see if you like it, start with yellow accessories. Givenchy’s small GV3 bag in mustard yellow would add a classy accent to a navy blazer, as would Zara’s printed muslin scarf. You can also put your best foot forward with a pair of yellow heels or pumps: Boden has a gorgeous selection right now in a particularly sunny shade.

Break it up

According to Cosmopolitan, colour blocking is another major fashion trend we should all be looking out for this season. Insert a shot of yellow into your colour mix. ASOS, as usual, is right on the money with their bright block athleisure wear, but for something rather more sophisticated, check out Karen Millen’s colour block panelled dress or the primary coloured block shirt dress from Polo Ralph Lauren.

Let the sunshine in

Pick a single item in yellow and let it light up your look. There’s no shortage of yellow basics this season — from Reiss’ Haya tailored shorts to Gap’s canary yellow vintage soft raglan pullover sweatshirt — and they will pair especially well with denim, navy, and white. Mix and match the items you wear your statement piece with and you’ll make a positive impression everywhere from the office to the beach.

Go all out

If you have been waiting for an opportunity to shine, now’s the time. In 2019 you have every excuse to dress head to toe in yellow, and you have got a wealth of fabulous frocks and jumpsuits to choose from. Wearing LK Bennett’s Montague yellow bow print silk tea dress you will be the best dressed guest at any summer wedding or garden party. Mums-to-be will love Lily and Ribbon’s Raffaela dress, the golden colour and shape of which is right on trend.
