How to support businesses during the Coronavirus outbreak

support small businesses from home during coronavirus

The Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak and resulting lockdowns has brought the world to its knees. Businesses are closing down left, right and center, and both individuals and governments are suffering the resulting economical impact. We’ve decided to break from our usual content for the time being and bring you a selection of ways you can help both small businesses and large businesses, during this difficult time when we all need to support one another.

How to support the travel industry

  1. Instead of cancelling your flights and hotel bookings, re-book them for the end of the year or even next year.
  2. Purchase loyalty points from hotel and airline companies and then use them for a holiday when the Coronavirus situation comes to an end.
  3. If you’re able to, book a luxury hotel and take a staycation in your own city or area – just stay in the hotel room and order room service and watch movies. It’ll do you the world of good to just get out of the house if you’re self-isolating and turn it into a luxurious escape with a loved one for a night or two.
  4. Continue to share inspiration on social media, blogs and review sites and get people excited to travel as soon as the outbreak ends!

How to support restaurants, bars and theatres

  1. Purchase gift cards from your favourite restaurant, bar or theatre and spend it when the Coronavirus outbreak ends.
  2. You can book to see a show or concert up to a year in advance so book that show in now and add an extra donation if the venue gives the option.
  3. Make a one-off or recurring donation to your favourite theatre, concert venue, small musician, or museum.
  4. Carry-out and delivery is still available from restaurants (and even certain bars are offering things like cocktail kits) – just make sure you leave a tip for any staff you collect take-out from, and give one to your delivery driver.

How to support the retail and luxury industries

  1. Buy your groceries from your local grocery store instead of the big supermarket chains.
  2. Shop online! You can easily shop online for anything from your couch or work station. Even local book stores are offering to deliver books for no delivery fee, so avoid Amazon if you can and check your local book store first.
  3. Maintain your memberships (such as a gym or members club) and pay in advance for services that you book for a few months time.
  4. Purchase gifts for people, either for future birthdays and next Christmas, or just because times are hard right now and everyone deserves a little cheer-me-up.
