We Tested Out Warwick le Lagon Vanuatu’s New Overwater Villas

When you think of overwater villas set in tropical crystalline waters, your mind likely flits to the Maldives, Bora Bora, or even the Seychelles. However, just a three hour flight from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, is a tiny collection of South Pacific islands offering overwater luxury at a fraction of the price and with far less tourists cluttering up the place. Warwick le Lagon on the Melanesian island nation of Vanuatu, have recently refurbished their overwater bungalows to rival those in other parts of the world.

Arriving at Warwick le Lagon Vanuatu

Set over the sparkling waters of Erakor Lagoon, we gasped in unison at the flawless interiors as we stepped through the door. Due to the recency of completion, the photographs online hadn’t been updated before we arrived and so what we saw in-front of us was world’s away from the tired and old-fashioned interiors shown on the website. Instead, we were to spend two nights in a luxurious and contemporary bungalow suite that wouldn’t look out of place in an interiors magazine or a designers Pinterest board.

Warwick le Lagon’s Overwater Villas

The newly-renovated open-plan suites feature a split-level layout with a large and spacious living area which opens out onto the overwater terrace, and a cosy bedroom area on the upper level. The bathroom is flawless, with a large bath which overlooks the lagoon, and features that would make even the contemporary skeptic ooh and ahh. From the adorable make-up flannel to the rustic wooden towel hangers, and the chrome gold sinks and shimmering ocean-green tiles adorning the shower.

The Hotel’s Amenities

The rest of the hotel has plenty on offer, including a luxurious spa, fine-dining teppenyaki restaurant, plenty of watersports, and a boat that takes you over to Erakor Island for a small fee. Erakor Island is worth visiting for lunch due to their local menu featuring a variety of fresh seafood dishes. We loved the Oka which is a little like Poke but creamier as it’s made with coconut milk.  The beach on Erakor Island is also a tropical paradise, and due to the lack of a proper sandy beach at Warwick Le Lagon you’ll likely want to spend an afternoon on the island sunbathing after lunch.

At night-time make sure you sit out on the overwater terrace of your villa and stare up at the stars. There is so little light pollution here that you can see millions of them – including the Southern Cross (Crux). During the day you’ll see hundreds of bright orange starfish through the clear waters!
