AG Reviews: Afternoon Tea at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park

Just steps away from the hustle and bustle of Knightsbridge is a quintessentially British experience in one of London’s most celebrates hotels. After a long year of restrictions and staying safe inside, a treat and some social time was desperately needed and The Rosebury at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park was the chosen location. What ensued was a perfect afternoon of unique teas and delicate cakes amongst the luxurious elegance of The Rosebury.

A unique afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental London

No place is as ideal for a ladies afternoon tea than the Mandarin Oriental, with its welcoming fragrance as you walk through the doors and the stunning interior design aesthetics blending traditional features with contemporary furnishings. The service is impeccable; attentive but not too overbearing, and friendly without being too familiar.

We were seated on a stunning forest-green sofa by the large windows, the early autumn light from outside flooding through. Our Moët & Chandon arrived and while we sipped from the beautiful twisted-stem glasses, an ornate gold tree was placed next to us, onto which our afternoon tea was hung from one of the branches. It was impressive, and the indulgent theatrics certainly made us smile.

The menu at the Mandarin Oriental afternoon tea

Naturally we began with the sandwiches, which are presented rolled rather than sliced. Favourites included the smoked and teriyaki poached salmon with pickled cucumber and wasabi tobiko on brown bread, and the roasted Hereford beef with horseradish & celeriac remoulade.

What followed were the most perfect scones – a selection of plain and fruit – accompanied with thick clotted cream and enough jam and lemon curd to pile on generously thick layers of the sweet stuff on each half of the scones.

My favourite part of the experience however, was of course the pastries. Each one looked like an exquisite work of art, to the point where it was difficult to muster up the courage to devour them. But devour them we did, with the strawberry and peach tart and raspberry shortcake being the clear winners.

The Rosebury provides a luxurious escape in London

The Rosebury at Mandarin Oriental provided a luxurious afternoon escape from the goings on outside and stresses of the pandemic. Combined with the perfectly crafted sandwiches and sweet treats, you simply cannot ask for a more perfect location for a relaxed afternoon tea experience.
