Sunday Lunch at Stratford-Upon-Avon’s The Woodsman

A new arrival on Stratford-Upon-Avon’s already thriving foodie scene, The Woodsman offers fine dining with sustainability at its core. We headed there to enjoy a spot of Sunday lunch.

The location of The Woodsman is as impressive as its menu. Situated in the heart of the town is Hotel Indigo: a new boutique hotel that houses the restaurant. Just minutes away from Shakespeare’s birthplace, it’s an ideal pitstop for a day of historical sightseeing.

INTERIOR AND ATMOSPHERE

A summer’s day is when The Woodsman is at its best. The bright, modern space feels incredibly open; with the chef’s wood-fire cooking station taking centre stage and vast double doors leading out onto an impressive patio area with wooden decking. The minimalist decor of brickwork and copper let the food do the talking whilst the moving Art-deco esque drinks trolley (complete with mixologist who offered made to measure cocktails) is a lovely touch.

THE FOOD AND MENU AT THE WOODSMAN

The ‘field to fork’ philosophy is integral to The Woodsman, with meat and fish dominating the menu. All food is carefully sourced, with fresh fish from the Cornish seaside, vegetables from nearby Evesham and venison delivered to the restaurant by a professional Huntsman.

For starters, we tucked into a creamy chicken liver parfait (perfectly complemented with grapes and a homemade warm brioche loaf) and a fresh, succulent seafood platter (a combination of juicy prawns, oysters, sea trout and fennel). It was the perfect way to begin our meal and the mains continued to satisfy; with us opting for the woodfired bantam chicken (simply but beautifully cooked with lemon, garlic and its own juices) and Gloucestershire Old Spot Pork Belly.

Somehow, there was room for desert: we tried the light and tangy Apricot fool, the perfect dish for a summer’s day alongside the more traditional artisan cheese selection.

OUR VERDICT OF THE WOODSMAN STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

Put simply, The Woodsman puts quality of ingredients at the heart of its menu, and it shows. Easily one of the best dining options in Stratford-Upon-Avon, this restaurant delivers on both style and substance.
